Can I Straighten My Teeth As An Adult?

Can I Straighten My Teeth As An Adult? What You Need To Know

While many people consider orthodontia or teeth straightening treatments as being primarily used by teens or children, we’re happy to tell you that you can achieve a straighter smile at any age. Options for discreet adult orthodontic treatments have developed hugely over the past several years, and you now have multiple choices for straightening that smile, whether you’re seventeen or seventy!

While many people find charm in a crooked grin, if your smile makes you frown, don’t despair. Even if you missed out on straightening your teeth in your teen years, it’s never too late to achieve the smile you want. At City Smiles, we are dedicated to helping patients fix their perceived imperfections, so if you’ve always wanted a straighter smile, you’re in the right place.

Are There Benefits To Straightening My Teeth As An Adult?

There are numerous benefits to undergoing teeth straightening treatment, whatever your age. A straighter smile can increase your confidence, as well as improve your overall oral hygiene.

Misaligned teeth often overlap, which means that there can be numerous little nooks and crannies between your teeth that are just out of reach of your toothbrush. When teeth are crowded together, there are more hidden areas for food particles to lurk, which means more opportunities for bacteria to develop and grow. The increase of this hidden bacteria in your mouth can cause numerous dental problems, including bad breath, an increased likelihood of tooth decay, and periodontal disease.

How Does Straightening My Teeth Improve My Oral Health?

As mentioned, skew teeth can result in hidden areas where bacteria can thrive. When your teeth are straight, there are fewer places where bacteria can lurk, meaning you can more efficiently and effectively clean your teeth. This leads to increased oral health. Should the bacteria continue to thrive and grow unabated, you are susceptible to developing gum disease such as gingivitis, which if left untreated, can develop into periodontitis. Periodontitis is a serious gum disease that can cause gum recession, tooth loss, and even damage to the jawbone – so it’s something to avoid!

What Are My Options For Straightening My Teeth As An Adult?

While traditional metal braces remain a stalwart of tooth straightening treatments, times have changed, and a mouthful of metal is no longer your only option for obtaining a straighter smile. Indeed, with multiple options available, including ceramic braces, invisible lingual braces, or clear plastic aligners such as Invisalign, you have several methods to choose from. At City Smiles, we recommend Invisalign for straightening your teeth in adulthood.

Why Should I Consider Invisalign?

The most benefit of Invisalign treatment for straightening your teeth is the fact that it is incredibly discreet. A series of clear plastic aligners snaps over your teeth, so there’s no unsightly metal marring your smile and no uncomfortable wires protruding into the tender skin of your inner cheeks. Moreover, because Invisalign is removable, you won’t have to make too many adjustments to your diet or general lifestyle.

Due to Invisalign aligners being clear and transparent, many adults report that they don’t suffer any knocks to their confidence while undergoing the treatment process. Your smile will remain crystal clear and shiny bright while it straightens itself out.

How Can We Help?

City Smiles is a recognised provider of Invisalign, meaning that we can assist you through every part of the straightening process using the product. We’ll begin by taking digital scans of your mouth before sending that data to a laboratory where your Invisalign aligners will be custom-made for you. Once your aligners have been manufactured, we will ensure that they fit comfortably to ensure the success of the realignment treatment. Once you’ve received your Invisalign, your only responsibility is to wear them for 22 hours per day (removing them to eat and drink), keep them clean, and maintain your oral hygiene as normal. The aligners are replaced every two weeks, so you’ll need to carve out time in your schedule to visit City Smiles every 14 days for your next set, but other than that, there shouldn’t be too much disruption to your daily life.
